Not sure how to tell if metal is ferrous or non-ferrous?

It's one of the most common question we get asked.

Non-ferrous metals include aluminium, brass, copper, nickel, tin, lead, and zinc, as well as precious metals like gold and silver. Non-ferrous metals can be bent or shaped more easily than ferrous metals, they are also usually much lighter (not lead and gold though - they're really heavy!). They tend not to rust or corrode so much, which is why you’ll find these materials in use for gutters, water pipes, roofing, and road signs. Finally, they are also non-magnetic, which makes them perfect for use in small electronics and as electrical wiring.

Non-ferrous metals are often used in the aircraft or canning industries where their lightness is a big advantage.

By contrast, most ferrous metals also have magnetic properties, so if you could stick your kids artwork to it with a magnet then it's ferrous metal.

So the chances are you've got some non-ferrous metal to recycle if...

You've got:

  • some cable - thick or thin - doesn't matter

  • electric motors, or dynamos

  • transformers (especially the big robots in the movies, they're full of the stuff)

  • lead acid batteries

  • gel cell batteries

  • plumbing pipework

  • metal guttering
